HOW DO SEARCH ENGINES RANK WEB PAGES?

Imagine for a moment that website pages are like an essay and the rankings in a search engine was like an essay writing competition with the best essays getting ranking on the first page. How would you know which essay is the most relevant and credible?

The early search engines would rank these essays by counting how many keywords there were on a page and the essay with the most words would be ranked at the top. As you can imagine there was widespread abuse of stuffing a page with keywords.

The reason why the Google search engine was so revolutionary was that not only did it the critique the content on the webpage, it also found out how popular the essays were by counting the links to these pages.

Google’s measurement of this link popularity to a page is called a Pagerank and is on an increasing scale of 1 to 10. Google made the assumption that websites that were more popular were more credible as well.

This is similar to the way the voting system on the TV show “Dancing with the Stars” works. An internal panel of judges gives the dancers a score then the audience phones in with their votes. The figures are crunched and a ranking is given.

Where it differs slightly is that with Google, not all votes are created equal. One way inbound links from high Pagerank sites are considered the most valuable links and given more weight than a link from a low Pagerank website.
